Draw an open or closed path, and leave the path selected.Ĭlick on your scatter brush in the Brushes panel. Select the Pen tool or one of Illustrator's shape-drawing tools, including the Rectangle and Ellipse tools. To leave the artwork in its original color, set the colorization method to "None." Finally, select colorization options to vary the color of your original symbol as it scatters, based on the current stroke color shown in the toolbox. Your rotation options can apply relative to the page or the path. Change the drop-down menus from "Fixed" to "Random," and set minimum and maximum percentages for size, spacing and scatter variation, and a degree range between 180 and -180 for rotation. By default, Illustrator creates scatter brushes with all four of these attributes set to Fixed, which produces output with no variations. Name your brush and select size, spacing, scatter and rotation options for it. The Scatter Brush Options dialog box appears on your screen so you can customize your new brush. Open the "Window" menu and choose "Brushes." Press "V" to switch to the Selection tool.ĭrag the symbol onto the Brushes panel, or open the flyout menu at the top right corner of the Brushes panel and choose "New Brush." When the New Brush dialog box opens, select the "New Scatter Brush" radio button and click the "OK" button. Click once on your artboard to add a single instance of the symbol at your cursor position. Choose a symbol from the Symbols panel and click on it to activate it.
